Dental Emergency in Dallas? Here’s What to Do Before You Reach Us

August 6, 2026

A cracked tooth at dinner. A sudden, throbbing toothache at midnight. A child’s fall that knocks a tooth loose on the playground. Dental emergencies never check the calendar — and when one hits, knowing what to do in the first few minutes can be the difference between saving a tooth and losing it.

As a trusted dentist in Dallas, Prestige Dental sees dental emergencies walk through our doors every week. Below, Dr. Manish Patel and our team break down exactly what to do for the most common dental emergencies — so you’re prepared before you even pick up the phone.

1. Severe Toothache

A persistent, throbbing toothache is often a sign of infection or decay reaching the nerve.

What to do:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water
  • Gently floss around the tooth to rule out trapped food
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed
  • Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum or tooth — it can burn soft tissue

If the pain doesn’t subside within a day, it may point to a deeper issue that needs a root canal to save the tooth.

2. Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Tooth

Time matters here — a tooth re-implanted within 30–60 minutes has the best chance of survival.

What to do:

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown (top), never the root
  • Rinse it gently with water — don’t scrub it
  • Try to place it back in the socket; if that’s not possible, keep it in milk or your own saliva
  • Get to our Dallas office immediately

3. Cracked or Broken Tooth

What to do:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Save any broken pieces if you can
  • Avoid chewing on that side until you’re seen

Depending on severity, treatment may range from bonding to a crown, or in more advanced cases, tooth extraction.

4. Lost or Loose Filling/Crown

What to do:

  • Keep the area clean
  • If a crown falls out, you can use a dab of denture adhesive or dental cement (available at pharmacies) to temporarily reseat it
  • Don’t use super glue

5. Object Stuck Between Teeth

What to do:

  • Try gently flossing it out
  • Never use a sharp metal object, which can cut your gums or scratch enamel
